Several parts of Sri Lanka could experience heavy showers of around 100mm, as rainy conditions are expected to continue across the southwestern areas of the island over the next 36 hours, the Department of Meteorology said.

The Met. Department said a low-pressure area located over the Andaman Sea region of the Bay of Bengal, northeast of Sri Lanka is expected to further intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours.

Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, the prevailing rainy conditions in the southwestern part of the country are expected to continue due to the wind flow towards the system.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

The Met. Department warned that heavy falls of around 100mm are likely at some places in these areas.

Several spells of showers are also expected in the North Central Province and in the Mannar District, while showers or thundershowers are likely at several places in the Uva Province and in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, strong winds of around 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, North Central and Northwestern Provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The general public has been advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
