The Irrigation Department has issued an Amber flood warning for the Nilwala River Basin, warning of a possible minor flood situation within the next 24 hours.
The warning was issued at 2 a.m. today (24) following heavy showers affecting the Nilwala River Basin and an analysis of water levels recorded at river gauging stations maintained by the Irrigation Department.
According to the Department, low-lying areas of the Nilwala River floodplain in the Pasgoda, Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya and Thihagoda Divisional Secretariat Divisions could be affected.
Residents in the identified areas have been urged to exercise extreme caution, while motorists travelling through potentially affected areas have also been advised to remain vigilant.
The Irrigation Department has also requested relevant Disaster Management authorities to take necessary precautionary measures due to the developing situation.
