The Department of Meteorology has issued a red-level warning for strong winds and rough seas for multi-day fishing boats operating in the deep-sea areas of the Bay of Bengal.

The Deep Depression over South Odisha moved north-northwestwards, weakened into a Depression, and was centred at 5:30 a.m. today (25) near latitude 20.5°N and longitude 82.5°E, close to Nuapada, Odisha.

Thereafter, it is very likely to continue moving north-northwestwards and gradually weaken over the next 24 hours, the Department stated.

Wind speeds in the sea areas marked under the “Warning” category may increase to 70 kmph at times. Heavy thundershowers may also occur, and sea conditions in these areas are expected to become very rough.

Wind speeds in the sea areas marked under the “Advisory” category on the map may increase to 55–65 kmph at times, with sea conditions becoming rough or very rough.

Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture into the sea areas bounded by 14°N to 22°N latitude and 82°E to 90°E longitude until further notice.

Naval and fishing communities currently operating in these sea areas are advised to move away from the affected areas.

Those engaged in activities in the affected sea areas are advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard, it added.
