President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has rejected claims that the government’s investigations into alleged corruption are politically motivated, saying there is no intention to take revenge against any individual.

Addressing a public rally in Gampaha today (27), President Dissanayake said there would be no limit to pursuing action against those accused of corruption and that the investigations would continue during the remainder of the government’s current term and beyond.

He said some of the investigations were complex and required international assistance, which could result in delays.

President Dissanayake stressed that the present government had no personal or political motive to retaliate against its opponents, saying the ongoing investigations should not be interpreted as acts of political revenge.

He also referred to what he described as instances of political retaliation under previous administrations, including the treatment of former Army Commander and presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka following the 2010 presidential election.

The President further alleged that restrictions had been imposed on Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers following the 2019 presidential election and that the CID Director had been transferred before the appointment of a Prime Minister.

He said the present government’s approach to corruption investigations was intended to pursue accountability rather than political retaliation.
