A six-month pilot project for the demerit points system for traffic offences will commence in October, according to Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Transport this morning (28), the Minister stated that the programme is expected to continue until March 31 next year.
The Ministry of Transport has decided to introduce the “Demerit System” to reduce the number of road accidents occurring across the country.
Under the scheme, drivers will be allocated a specific number of points for a period of two years, with points deducted according to the traffic offences they commit.
The Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development plans to implement the programme through a digital system by further expanding the online payment methods currently available for settling traffic fines.
