Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody at Welikada Prison, has been admitted to the Cardiology Unit of the National Hospital in Colombo.
Rajapaksa was previously taken to the National Eye Hospital on October 9 for specialist medical treatment and was subsequently returned to prison custody.
She had been referred to a prison medical specialist on October 8 due to an eye condition.
Meanwhile, the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court earlier rejected an anticipatory bail application filed by Rajapaksa in connection with the possibility of her arrest by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) over investigations into the Siriliya Saviya Fund account.
Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested on October 7 at her residence on Poorwarama Road in Kirulapone by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
According to the Bribery Commission, the arrest followed the recording of a statement from her that lasted nearly two hours in connection with investigations into alleged financial irregularities and transactions involving an account linked to the Siriliya Saviya Fund.
Following her arrest, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court ordered that she be remanded until October 13.
Additional Magistrate Darshima Premaratne also directed prison authorities to make arrangements for Rajapaksa to receive medical treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.
