Former Southern Provincial Council Minister and current UPFA candidate D.V. Upul was arrested for allegedly assaulting supporters of another UPFA candidate.

Five persons were injured and hospitalised after a group of supporters of D.V. Upul and supporters of M.K. Kasun clashed in Beliatta.

The wounded persons, including supporters from both factions, have been admitted to Beliatta and Matara hospitals.

Upul, who was arrested over the incident, is to be produced before the Tangalle Magistrate Court today, police said.

The UPFA Hambantota District candidate was also arrested in February over the assault of several UNP supporters. He was, however, released on bail after being produced before the Walasmulla Magistrate.

The former Fisheries Minister of the Southern Provincial Council was previously arrested in Tangalle for allegedly assaulting a SLTB employee on August 01, 2013.

However, the bus driver who was allegedly assaulted by the D.V. Upul withdrew his case against the politician.
