Muzammil resigns as Governor to support Sajith

The Governor of the Uva Province, A. J. M. Muzammil, says he has tendered his resignation as the Uva Province Governor in order to support SJB Presidential Candidate and Opposition Leader, Sajith Premadasa in the upcoming presidential election.

In a letter addressed to the President, Muzammil announces his resignation from the position of Governor of the Uva Province, with immediate effect.

He also expresses gratitude to President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the confidence reposed in his abilities, in continuing the appointment granted to him by then President Gotabaya Rajapakse, as Governor of the Uva Province, and for giving him an opportunity to “continue serving my country during a very challenging period in our history.”

“As you know, I have always conducted myself with professionalism and integrity. As such, I am unable to cede to any request to publicly support any Presidential Candidate in the upcoming Presidential Elections, whilst holding the office of Governor of the Uva Province.”

Former MP and Colombo Mayor Muzammil was appointed as Governor of North-Western Province by then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in November 2019 while he was subsequently appointed as the Uve Province Governor in August 2020.

“I hereby record my disappointment in certain Governors who have been vociferously campaigning for various Presidential Candidates whilst holding the office of Governor,” he further stated.

Muzammil also informs the President that, after his resignation, he intends to support ‘Samagi jana Balawegaya’ (SJB) Presidential Candidate Sajith Premadasa.

Former MP and Colombo Mayor Muzammil was appointed as Governor of North-Western Province by then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in November 2019 while he was subsequently appointed as the Uve Province Governor in August 2020.
