Drugs worth over Rs. 15 billion seized by SL Navy so far this year

Sri Lanka Navy says it has seized narcotics worth over Rs. 15 billion during operations conducted along the island’s coasts to prevent drug smuggling via the sea route, so far in 2024.

 

Meanwhile, the gross street value of the narcotics seized during the operations conducted between January 01, 2024 and yesterday (08), is estimated to be around Rs. 15,491 million, the navy said. 

 

The seized drugs includes nearly 385 kg of heroin with an estimated street value of around Rs. 9,631 million.

 

Meanwhile, the Navy has also seized 511 kg of crystal methamphetamine, also known as ‘Ice’, with an estimated street value of Rs. 4,860.

 

In operations conducted so far this year, significant quantities of other illicit substances were also seized, including Kerala cannabis, hashish and various intoxicating pills, the navy said. 

 

Additionally, the Navy said that 162 individuals suspected of involvement in drug trafficking have been apprehended, and 11 boats used to transport drugs have been seized in connection with these operations.
