Sri Lanka finish second at South Asian Athletics Championships

Sri Lanka finished second at the fourth South Asian Senior Athletics Championships held in Ranchi India.

 

Following the conclusion of the three-day event, Sri Lanka had claimed 16 gold medals, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals for a total of 40 medals.

 

Sri Lanka won eight gold medals on the final day of the competition. Sri Lanka won 16 gold medals.

 

Sri Lanka began Sunday with Dasuni Kaushalya winning the gold medal in the Women’s 400m Hurdles event. Kaushalya won her event after clocking an impressive 58.66 seconds.

 

Araliya Sathsarani secured the silver medal after clonking 59.24 seconds in the event ahead of two Indian athletes.

 

Sri Lanka secured two more gold medals in javelin throw events with national record holder Rumesh Tharanga winning the Men’s event with a throw of 84.29m.

 

Sumedha Ranasinghe won the silver medal in the event with a throw of 81.62m.

 

Veteran Dilhani Lekamge claimed the gold medal in the Women’s javelin throw event with a throw of 60.14 m.

 

Harsha Karunarathne won the gold medal in the Men’s 800m event.

 

Karunarathne clocked 1:59.96 to claim the gold medal for Sri Lanka.

 

Madushani Herath secured a gold medal for Sri Lanka in the Women’s Long Jump event.
She secured the gold medal with a jump of 6.23m.

 

Meanwhile, Methmi Wijesuriya claimed the gold medal in the Women’s 10,000m event after clocking 35:39.95.

 

Sri Lanka’s speed sensation Safiya Yamic re-wrote record books and won the gold medal in the Women’s 200m event.

 

Yamic secured the gold medal by clocking a record timing of 23.58 seconds ahead of two Indian athletes.

 

Sri Lanka won the gold medal in the Men’s 4x400m relay event at the South Asian Athletics Championships 2025 at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, Morabadi, Ranchi.

 

The Sri Lanka quartet completed the penultimate event of the Championship with a timing of 3:05.12.

 

Meanwhile, India topped the medals tally with 20 gold medals, 20 silver and 18 bronze medals.
Nepal finished third in the table with six medals.

 

Bangladesh claimed three bronze medals while the Maldives won a bronze medal.

 

Bhutan failed to win any medals at the South Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Ranchi.
