Leaders of opposition parties have submitted a proposal to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake urging the implementation of a state of emergency in the country, specifically to manage the ongoing disaster situation.

The President urged government and opposition representatives to work together effectively to protect the lives of those affected and to provide them with the necessary relief during this challenging time.

The President made these remarks during a meeting held this morning (28) at the Defence Headquarters with government and opposition representatives to assess the immediate measures required in response to the emergency disaster situation caused by adverse weather conditions.

Opposition MPs proposed that emergency regulations be implemented, if required, to manage the unfolding situation and ensure the efficiency of rescue and relief operations, expressing their full support for such measures.

President Dissanayake assured that there will be no financial constraints in carrying out rescue and relief work. He stated that Disaster Management District Committees have already been convened and funds have been released to District Secretaries to meet urgent requirements.

He emphasized that no circular should hinder the utilization of these funds and in cases where obstacles arise, funds may be used with the concurrence of the District Coordinating Committee.

He further noted that helicopters are currently being deployed to rescue people stranded in areas inaccessible to ground teams. The President added that the Indian High Commission has already agreed to provide additional helicopter support should further assistance be required.

President Dissanayake stated that cooked meals, healthcare facilities and other essential relief services are being continuously provided to displaced people in safe shelters, those remaining in their homes and those staying in alternative locations. He instructed public representatives to promptly notify the Disaster Management Centre of any areas in their districts that are still unable to access relief.

The President also highlighted that preparations have already been made to respond to the growing risks in the Western Province.

Public representatives briefed the President on the situation and requirements in their respective districts.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, government and opposition MPs, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayaka, Defence Ministry Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. Harsha Sooriyapperuma, ministry secretaries, senior government officials, the Tri-Forces Commanders, the Inspector General of Police and senior officers of the security forces were present at the meeting.
