South-Asia Delegation of the European Parliament visits Sri Lanka

The South-Asia Delegation Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will undertake a visit to Sri Lanka from today (February 22) to 25 February at the invitation of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.


The previous visit by the South-Asia Delegation of the European Parliament took place in 2008. The visit to Sri Lanka is in the context of a wider regional mission including to the Maldives, undertaken by the Delegation, states the Ministry of External Affairs.


During the visit, the delegation will meet with Chamal Rajapaksa, Speaker of the Parliament and interact with Members of Parliament. The programme also includes discussions with the Minister of External Affairs, Minister of Economic Development and other senior representatives of the Government. The MEPs will also make field visits to Jaffna and Vavuniya.


The Delegation is headed by Ms. Jean Lambert (Greens/UK) and will comprise of Mr. John Attard Montalto, 1st Vice Chair (Socialist and Democrats), Mr. Thomas Mann, 2nd Vice Chair (European People’s Party), Ms. Lidia Joanna Geringer de Oedenberg, Quaestor (Socialist and Democrats), Mr. Niccolo Rinaldi, Committee on Regional Development (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats), Mr. Salvi  Binev, Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (Non-attached), Mr. Nirj Deva, Vice Chair, Committee on Development (Conservatives and Reformists).
