A total of 12 spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened as a precautionary measure due to prevailing adverse weather conditions and a rapid rise in water levels.

Authorities reported that heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas, along with the opening of spill gates of the Kala Wewa, has led to a significant increase in water inflow into the Rajanganaya Reservoir.

To ensure the safety of the reservoir, the irrigation engineer in charge stated that a number of open spill gates were opened last evening.

Accordingly, four spill gates have been opened to a height of six feet each, another four gates to five feet each and a further four gates to four feet each.

As a result, approximately 14,287 cubic feet of water per second is being discharged into the Kala Oya.

Authorities have urged residents living in low-lying areas along the Kala Oya, as well as those using the river, to remain highly vigilant due to the rising water levels.
