
The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Nugegoda Division arrested on bribery charges was further remanded until March 22 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today.
The Rs. 1 million comprising of 200 Rs. 5000 notes which was accepted by the ASP was produced at the Magistrate Court by the Bribery Commission.
The ASP, Nihal Mendis was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption following a complaint filed by a woman from Maharagama.
Submitting a report to court the Bribery Commission stated that the woman, who operates a welfare center providing facilities to patients visiting the Maharagama Cancer Hospital, had filed a complaint with the ASP in question seeking to resolve a dispute regarding the ownership of the property.
The police officer had requested a bribe of Rs. 1 million in order to resolve the issue in a manner favorable to the complainant.
He was subsequently arrested by Bribery Commission officials while accepting the bribe at a Temple in Wijerama on March 9.
The Assistant Superintendent of Police was ordered remanded until March 22 by the Colombo Magistrate following a request by the Bribery Commission.
