Lalith and Kugan not in custody - Govt. tells court

The Sri Lankan Government today informed the appellate court that the Movement for People’s Struggle activists Lalith Kumar Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganathan are not in their custody.

The state attorney said that objections will be filed regarding the petition, filed by the relatives of the two missing activists.

Informing court that the missing individuals were not in the custody of the respondents named in the petition, the state attorney therefore said objection will be filed in this regard.

Ordering that the petition be taken up again on April 27, the Court of Appeals stated that the complaint will be forwarded to the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court to conduct hearings on the matter.

The Court of Appeal on February 29 provided the respondents with time to file objections and also ordered them to hand in a report if Lalith and Kugan were in their custody.

Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, the Inspector General of Police, the Army Commander and the Jaffna District Army Commander are named as respondents to the case.

Lalith Kumara Veeraraj, an organizer of the Movement for People’s Struggle, formed by JVP dissidents, and Kugan Muruganathan, a Tamil activist, had disappeared on December 09, 2011 in Jaffna.
