Police last night (June 29) arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting that occurred in Katuwana on June 15 following a JVP rally which claimed the lives of two people, the Police Media Spokesman’s office stated.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the suspect along with a T-56 weapon, three T-56 magazines, 49 bullets and eight 9mm caliber bullets, police stated.
Two persons including a female were killed when a group of individuals on motorbikes had opened fire at a JVP rally at Katuwana, Hambantota on June 15.
One person was injured from the incident and hospitalized.
Meanwhile, Geeganagamage Amarasiri also known as “Julampitiya Amare” alleged to be involved in the Katuwana killings and wanted for other cases has surrendered to the Tangalle High Court through an attorney on June 19.
The Court ordered that he be imprisoned until July 11.
He was later identified by 3 out of 4 of the witnesses at the identification parade of the Katuwana Shooting incident held at the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court on June 22.
