Police protection for A’pura doctors

Police today agreed to provide protection for the doctors of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, following the assault on a doctor of the hospital Thursday night by supporters of an election candidate.

It is said that the agreement was reached after considering a request by the Director of the hospital.

Accordingly police protection will be provided to the official residences of the doctors as well as to doctors reporting to duty for emergencies.

A doctor of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, Dr. Chamila Herath, was brutally assaulted on Thursday night while on call, allegedly by supporters of former Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake.

The doctors of the hospital engaged in a strike yesterday protesting the incident and demanding the arrest of the persons responsible.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) warned that doctors of all hospitals in North Central Province resort to strike action on Monday (03) if authorities fail to apprehend all responsible individuals.

However, so far three persons have been arrested over the incident and were remanded till September 11 after being produced at court.
