I will return to Sri Lanka soon - Basil

Former Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, speaking to Ada Derana, said that he will return to Sri Lanka soon and assist in the investigations into allegations against him.

Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara yesterday said that a court order will be obtained to bring down the former President’s brother in order to question him over alleged financial fraud within the Divi Neguma Department.

The former Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) National Organiser and his wife Pushpa Rajapaksaleft the country for the US on 11 January, following the defeat of elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Election.

He also resigned from the post of SLFP National Organiser on January 15 after accepting full responsibility for the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Election held on January 8.

Meanwhile a tense situation was reported in Medamulana earlier today when police had visited a house in the area with a court order for recording a statement from Basil Rajapaksa.

The police spokesman said that according to a directive from the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court, the former Minister has been summoned to the Financial Crimes Investigation Division and that a police officer had arrived at the Medamulana address in Basil Rajapaksa’s National Identity Card (NIC) and Passport.

The police officer had attempted to paste the court order on the door of the residence, due to it being unoccupied at the time, a group had objected claiming that the house belonged someone else.

ASP Ruwan Gunasekara stated that the Kaduwela Magistrate will be notified on the matter.
