The Government on Monday (1) denied allegations that it voted in favor of same-sex marriages at the United Nations budget committee.

The observation was made by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ajith P. Perera at a press conference held in Colombo.

“It was a vote on a circular issued by Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon with respect to the privileges and allowances of the officials attached to the UN,” Perera said.

“Having realized that their political careers are in trouble, these politicos would do anything to mislead the public for their survival,” he added.

The National Freedom Front (NFF) on Sunday (31) charged that the country’s culture and norms are in jeopardy with the Government’s decision to vote in favour of homosexuality at the United Nations budget committee. Spokesperson for the NFF, Muhammad Muzammil said that Sri Lanka was the only South Asian country to vote in favour of this resolution.
