The European Union (EU) says that although the ban imposed on fisheries exports from Sri Lanka has now been lifted, there is more to be done and that the challenge for Sri Lanka is to consolidate the progress that has been made.

EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives, David Daly, stated that the decision to lift the ban on exports of fisheries from Sri Lanka to the European market comes as a result of “a huge amount of effort and work” which has been done by Sri Lanka.

This work has been done by the fishermen, the fisheries community, the fishing industry, the fisheries authority, by the department and other authorities of the government, he told reporters today (17).

“Of course the situation is not today perfect. There are still things to be done. There is always more that can be done. And now the challenge for Sri Lanka is to consolidate the progress that has been made.”

The Ambassador expressed his deep appreciation for the strong cooperation from the Secretary to the Fisheries Ministry and the Fisheries Department on all of these issues.

“It has not been easy it has not been quick but it has been methodical step-by-step progress and we are very grateful as the European Union for this improved cooperation that we have received,” Mr Daly said.
