Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that from the year 2018 all students will be allowed to sit for the G.C.E. Advanced Level classes whether they passed the Ordinary Level examination or not.

Addressing an event held at the Education Ministry today (21), he said that a committee headed by the Prime Minister is taking the necessary steps to introduce new educational reforms.

He said that steps will be taken in the near future to provide 13 years of continuous education to every student.

He said that this will be implemented from the year 2018 and that students will be allowed to sit for the G.C.E. Advanced Level classes, in whichever streams they want, whether they passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination or not.

“We will introduce a host of new subjects to the education system,” he said, adding that a practical and employment driven education system will be established.

The minister also said that an independent center will be created to oversee national and private schools and that the quality and qualification of teachers will be looked into.
