Chairman of Avant Garde Maritime Services, Retired Major Nissanka Senadhipathi, says that if the government makes a formal request, he is prepared to assist with the current hijack situation involving eight Sri Lankan crew members of a oil tanker off the coast of Somalia.
“If the government officially asks for help, we will do it because under the prevailing environment we cannot even walk in the streets.”
“However, if any shipmen - not only Sri Lankans- are in distress, as a maritime security company we are duty bound to help,” he told Ada Derana in an interview.
However, the government of Sri Lanka must make the request formally in writing, he said.
