Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa called for an independent and impartial inquiry into the Mahara Prison unrest.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya Leader mentioned this at the parliament today (30).
An investigation conducted under the Secretary to the Ministry of Prisons is not fair or reliable, he said.
Accordingly, Premadasa requests for an independent team to find out the truth behind the incident.
He further expressed his displeasure over the inaction of the government until a new COVID-19 case cluster was created within prisons.
In response Minister in charge Sudarshani Fernandopulle said that they are willing to assign the inquiry on the matter to an independent committee.
She said that there seems to be an ‘invisible hand’ behind this incident.
Minister Fernandopulle stated that investigations regarding the incident will be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department as well.
