United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has again called upon the government of Sri Lanka to ‘live up to its responsibilities’ towards the United Nations as a host country, to ensure continuation of the vital work of the Organization to assist the people of Sri Lanka without any further hindrance.


Mr. Ki Moon had earlier appointed a panel of experts to advise him on the alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian law during the final stages of the conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE, which ended last year. It was met by heavy protest from Sri Lankan officials.


The Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (National Freedom Front) leader and government Minister Wimal Weerawansa has begun a fast unto death in front of the UN office in Colombo demanding that the panel be removed.
