The Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) has warned of the imminent risk of the spread of infectious diseases in localities that are affected by the floods as a result of the prevailing inclement weather.

Speaking in this regard, PHIU Chairman Upul Rohana explained that the spread of viral fevers and infections including dengue are likely to increase, while others infections such as diarrheal disease, too, are likely, as a result of the contamination of water sources.

He assured, however, that the PHIU has taken necessary measures regarding the matter, adding that the assocaition plans on joining hands with local authorities and other voluntary organisations to purify the affected drinking water source.

Rohana further noted that plans are underway to inspect all food stores in the relevant areas, in a bid to ensure food safety.

Further warning the public on the likely increase of dengue cases, given the significant rise of breeding sites for dengue mosquitos as a result of the continuous rains, PHIU Chairman Upul Rohana urged the pubic to remain cautious in this regard, and to take all measures required to ensure that no mosquito breeding sites are located within their residential premises, offices, etc.
