A tense situation was reported this afternoon (Oct. 24) near the Central Mail Exchange on the McCallum Road in Colombo.

According to Ada Derana correspondent, a group of officers attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) took three individuals including two Postal Department workers over their involvement in drug trafficking.

The parcel had been addressed to a woman in Mattakkuliya but a man had arrived at the Central Mail Exchange to claim the parcel by producing the woman’s National Identity Card (NIC). As suspicions were raised by the postal and Customs officials, he had fled the scene.

The Postal Department later informed the PNB of the matter, after which investigations were launched in tandem with the Criminal Investigation Department. This man, who was identified as an employee of the Postal Department, was subsequently arrested.

During interrogations, he had divulged that the parcel contained 5.7kg of ‘Kush’ cannabis and that another Postal Department worker was also involved in this drug peddling syndicate. The second postal worker was also later placed under arrest.

Upon interrogating the duo, the investigation officers uncovered information about the drug trafficker who leads the syndicate. The 31-year-old from Raththanapitiya was arrested today while he was on his way to pick up the parcel from the two postal workers, as planned.

The luxury car, which the suspect was travelling in, was also impounded by the PNB officers.
