Four students of Kelaniya University suspended for assaulting security officer

Four students of the University of Kelaniya have been suspended over the alleged incident of assaulting a security officer of the university, the university administration announced today.

On Monday (04), the university administration decided to close the University of Kelaniya, excluding the Faculty of Medicine, until further notice. Accordingly, it was announced that all hostels of the university except for the Medical Faculty’s hostel would also remain closed, while all students were instructed to vacate their respective dormitories before 8.00 a.m. today (Dec. 05).

The decision was reached by the administration in view of the alleged incident of a security officer of the university being abducted and assaulted while he was sleeping in the break room at night. Later, he had reportedly been tied to the entrance gate at the Student Centre.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya had stated that this decision was taken since the peaceful atmosphere which hitherto prevailed among the students and the non-academic staff has been challenged and that therefore disciplinary action would be taken against those responsible in order to re-establish the peace within the university.

Accordingly, he had also announced that all the premises related to the University of Kelaniya including the university premises in Dalugama and all other internal and external hostels of the university were prohibited areas for the students, except for the medical faculty students, until further notice.
