Election Commission informed of vacant MP seat

Secretary-General of Parliament has informed the Election Commission of the seat vacated by MP Chaminda Wijesiri, following his resignation.
In a press release, the Communication Department of Parliament said this was formally conveyed to the Chairman of the Election Commission in writing, pursuant to Section 64(1) of Parliamentary Elections Act No.01 of 1981.
Shortly after the first parliamentary session of 2024 kicked off this morning (Jan.09), Wijesiri told the House that he would step down as a Member of Parliament.
Later, the Communications Department of the Parliament confirmed that Wijesiri had handed in his resignation to the Secretary-General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera following the announcement made earlier.
