The Supreme Court has set a date to consider the Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed claiming that the rights of members of both, the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and the Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF) are being violated as a result of the government’s Domestic Debt Restructuring (DDO) programme.

Accordingly, the FR petitions are due to be taken up for consideration on 30 October 2024, as per a decision made by a three-member judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Justices S. Thurairaja, Shiran Gooneratne and Mahinda Samayawardhena today (23 Jan.).

Appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, the Additional Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne informed the court that preliminary objections will be filed for the dismissal of the relevant petitions, without taking them up for hearing.

The FR petitions were put forward by four persons including the General Secretary of the Free Trade Zones and General Services Employees Union, Anton Marcus
