The Prime Minister’s Office said it has been revealed that fake news created using the name, photographs, and video footage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, along with the unauthorized use of official logos of various media institutions and news websites, is being circulated on social media platforms.
Certain groups have published edited videos designed to appear as though the Prime Minister is expressing specific views, as well as fake social media posts featuring her photographs, according to the Prime Minister’s Media Division.
Through such misleading content, false information has been circulated regarding various business and employment opportunities, as well as the country’s economy and tax policies.
The Prime Minister’s Media Division further stated that these false narratives have been created using artificial intelligence (AI) and other modern technological tools. It urged the public not to be deceived by such misinformation and to remain vigilant.
The statement also noted that creating and distributing such false news through social media, in a manner that harms the government and violates the privacy and reputation of the Prime Minister, constitutes an offence punishable under law.
