Three Sri Lankans among injured in Kuwait airport attack

Three Sri Lankan nationals were among the 63 persons injured in an Iranian attack at Kuwait’s international airport earlier today (03), the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait confirmed.

In a Facebook post, the Embassy said that three Sri Lankans were injured in the attack on Kuwait’s main airport (T1) and the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Kuwait Dr. Lakshita Ratnayake and the Head of Labor Department M. R. C. B. Ekanayake visited the hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

Ambassador Ratnayake revealed that the Sri Lankans in question were engaged in maintenance work at the airport when the attack occurred and that they had sustained injuries to the head and other areas due to falling glass shards.

He said that they have received urgent medical treatment after being rushed to hospital and that none of them are in critical condition. He further said they would likely be discharged from hospital within a day or two.

The Sri Lankan Embassy also requests all Sri Lankans in Kuwait to be aware of the guidelines issued by the Kuwaiti government agencies regarding the current situation.

Gulf hostilities flared again on Wednesday as an Iranian attack killed an Indian national and injured 63 others at Kuwait’s international airport, forcing it to close temporarily.

Kuwait’s health ministry spokesman said 25 ambulances were dispatched at Kuwait International Airport, adding that “63 injured individuals were received and distributed among hospitals... This includes serious injuries... including head wounds, cerebral haemorrhages, amputations and injuries resulting from explosions.”

Those included “civilians, and people working at the airport and travellers,” it added.

Kuwait’s foreign ministry said Iranian attacks on its territory killed one person and damaged unnamed diplomatic missions.

The Indian foreign ministry said one of its citizens was killed at the airport and condemned the strike. “We again call on all parties to cease such attacks” on civilian targets, it said in a statement.

An airport source told AFP the deceased was a traveller.

Kuwait’s ministry of defence spokesman said 30 ballistic missiles and drones were launched as part of the “heinous Iranian aggression” that caused “significant material damage to the building”.
