A two-year-and-two-month-old toddler has died following a road accident in Mailapitiya in Thalathuoya, Kandy, police stated.
The incident occurred along the Tennekumbura –Ragala road, last afternoon (03).
According to police, the accident took place when a car travelling towards Tennekumbura attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with an oncoming three-wheeler.
At the time of the accident, the child was seated in the rear of the three-wheeler.
Three members of the same family travelling in the three-wheeler sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Hanguranketha Hospital for treatment.
Despite efforts to save her, the child succumbed to her injuries while receiving intensive care after admission.
The deceased has been identified as a resident of Unuwinna.
The toddler’s mother and father are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
The driver of the car involved in the collision has been arrested by the Thalathuoya Police.
Further investigations are underway.
