The Assistant Manager of a state-owned bank in Horana, who has been arrested over the disappearance of Rs. 35 million, was taken to the bank premises today (07) as investigations continued into the incident.
Police said the suspect was escorted to the location to assist investigators in reconstructing the events related to the alleged cash disappearance. Preliminary examinations were carried out at the bank, and further inquiries are ongoing.
Authorities said the suspect is expected to be taken to Millaniya following the completion of on-site investigations.
The suspect was previously detained for six days under a Magistrate’s Court order issued by the Horana Magistrate’s Court on June 6.
Meanwhile, the security officer arrested in connection with the incident has been remanded until June 11.
The case relates to a complaint received by Horana Police on June 3, alleging that Rs. 35 million, intended for deposit into ATM machines, went missing while being transported from the bank.
As initial investigations failed to yield conclusive leads, the inquiry was later handed over to the Peliyagoda North Crimes Division.
Police said CCTV footage showed the Assistant Manager retrieving cash from the bank vault on the morning of the incident. However, there was no surveillance coverage at the point where the money is believed to have exited the premises.
During a search conducted within the bank, investigators also recovered Rs. 1,740,000 hidden in a waste container.
Based on preliminary findings, investigators suspect that the Assistant Manager may have orchestrated the theft in coordination with the security officer.
Both suspects were subsequently arrested and produced before court. The Horana Magistrate has issued orders to obtain their mobile phone records and conduct searches of their residences.
The Assistant Manager, a 54-year-old resident of Wewala Gangoda, and the security officer, a 43-year-old from Bulathsinhala, remain in custody as investigations continue.
