Opposition political parties have decided to launch an indefinite protest opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station, condemning what they describe as improper treatment of the detained former head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay.
Meanwhile, legal representatives of Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay have requested urgent medical attention and an independent medical evaluation, citing concerns over his health condition while in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody.
In a letter to CID Director Shani Abeysekara, Suresh Sallay’s lawyers stated that he had instructed them to urgently meet him with documentation required for preparing his last will, following what they described as a serious deterioration in his health. The legal team also requested that Sallay be transferred to a fully equipped hospital and examined by an independent medical board.
The developments come amid mounting allegations regarding his treatment in custody, which have been strongly denied by police. Authorities have rejected claims of assault or inhumane treatment, stating that Sallay has not been subjected to any such conduct while under CID detention in connection with investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
Former Minister Udaya Gammanpila had earlier alleged that Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay had begun a ‘fast unto death’, claiming he was being subjected to mistreatment. Police have dismissed these allegations.
Meanwhile, the wife of former head of the SIS, Manori Sallay, has lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police calling for an independent investigation into alleged cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment. The complaint also raises concerns over access to food, medical care and basic facilities, and cites medical observations indicating complications linked to restricted conditions in custody.
Separately, religious observances were held at the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya today to invoke blessings for Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, attended by his family and organized by the Sarvajana Balaya.
Opposition political parties are also preparing to launch an indefinite protest opposite the Fort Railway Station tomorrow.
The former head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay was arrested by the CID on February 25 over allegations linked to the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings and remains in detention under a court order.
