The Sri Lanka Railway Guards’ Union stated that train services may be disrupted tomorrow (10) due to a trade union action to be carried out by railway guards.
Secretary of the Union Rukmal Bandara stated that night trains will be operated to their destinations. However, the union has decided not to report to work stations for trains scheduled to commence services tomorrow morning.
Accordingly, the union has decided to launch a 24-hour token strike tomorrow.
Speaking further, Bandara said railway cranes have been operating for several days in violation of safety regulations, posing risks to both passengers and Railway Department property, while disregarding established rules of the department.
He added that despite repeated warnings, the situation had continued, with similar incidents occurring on two occasions.
“We have issued a notice for several days not to allow this situation from recurring. But they have ignored that situation and have operated again on two occasions.”
The union further stated that it had requested disciplinary action against those responsible, but as no response was received, the decision to launch the symbolic strike was taken.
“If there are those who have protested against this and issued orders for this, we have requested that disciplinary action be taken against them. However, since there has been no response to our request, we have decided to go on a token strike,” he added.
