Sri Lanka has welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran to establish an immediate ceasefire.
Issuing a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism noted that the ceasefire represents a significant step towards de-escalation and long-term regional and global stability, including through the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the establishment of a framework for the continuation of negotiations.
Sri Lanka strongly supports the peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomacy and remains optimistic that this step will foster sustainable peace across the region, the statement said.
Sri Lanka also extended its sincere appreciation to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the State of Qatar for their pivotal roles as mediators, as well as to all partners whose support was instrumental in achieving this diplomatic outcome.
