
A Police Inspector attached to the Kalutara Special Crimes Investigation Unit, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), has been remanded until July 3 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
The suspect was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (23) following his arrest in connection with an alleged bribery incident.
Appearing before court, officials of the Bribery Commission informed that investigations into the case have not yet been concluded and further inquiries are ongoing.
Considering the submissions, Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva ordered that the suspect be remanded until July 3.
According to reports, the Special Crime Investigation Unit had been conducting an investigation into a vehicle belonging to a businessman in Kalutara, and the officer had allegedly demanded Rs. 1 million from him in return for not filing criminal charges in court in connection with the investigation.
The police officer had initially reportedly accepted a bribe of Rs. 100,000 from the complainant and was arrested at a hotel in Kalutara while attempting to collect the remaining Rs. 900,000.
