A further seven units of the Battery Energy Storage System project, initiated by the government to strengthen grid stability and provide relief to electricity consumers, arrived at the Colombo Port last evening.
According to the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation, the systems are scheduled to be installed near power substations in Panadura, Beliatta, Hambantota, Ampara, Vavunathivu, Valachchenai, and Mahiyanganaya.
The seven battery storage systems have a combined capacity to store 280MW of electrical energy, with plans to supply 70MW of power daily to the national grid.
Windforce PLC, a private company selected through an international competitive bidding process, is responsible for assembling and installing the battery storage systems. The company is currently engaged in installing similar systems at several locations.
Eight battery storage systems imported at the beginning of June under the same project are currently being installed near selected substations, with completion expected by the end of July. These systems are expected to contribute 80MW of electrical energy to the national grid.
The operation and management of the storage systems will be handled by the National System Operator (NSO) under the Ministry of Power and Energy, while maintenance activities will be carried out by the respective company, it said.
The government stated that the implementation of the battery storage project would help ensure a stable electricity supply, reduce environmental impacts, strengthen the national grid, and provide financial benefits to consumers.
The project aims to pass on the benefits gained through improved energy management and grid stability directly to electricity consumers in the future.
