Community Physician Specialist at the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), Dr. Prashila Samaraweera stated that the total number of dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka so far this year has exceeded 50,000.
She stated that a total of 50,459 dengue cases and 30 deaths have been reported to date.
Warning that the figures could rise further, Dr. Samaraweera said there has been no reduction in mosquito density and stressed the importance of regularly cleaning homes and surrounding environments.
She also cautioned that dengue cases could increase further due to public activities during the long weekend and urged people to use the period to clean their homes and surroundings.
“This is our country, and it is important for us to keep it clean, as doing so will help us reduce this disease. Therefore, please remain vigilant,” she said.
Dr. Samaraweera further advised that anyone experiencing a fever for more than two days should seek medical attention and undergo a blood test to determine whether they have dengue.
She emphasized that until it is confirmed whether a person has dengue, only paracetamol-based medications should be used to manage the fever.
