Issues faced by the farming community have escalated into a national-level crisis that requires urgent government attention, the leader of the Sarvajana Balaya, Parliamentarian Dilith Jayaweera has stated.
Speaking at a discussion with farmer representatives in Medirigiriya, Polonnaruwa today (01), MP Jayaweera said addressing the challenges in the agriculture sector must be treated as a top national priority.
He said discussions were underway on a broader approach to transform farmers into agricultural entrepreneurs capable of competing in regional and global markets, while ensuring the protection of Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector.
Parliamentarian Jayaweera also claimed that farmers had been “reduced to a laughing stock” and stressed the need for a structured long-term policy response.
Sarvajana Balaya Deputy Chairman Dr. Channa Jayasumana and Deputy Secretary Rushan Malinda also participated in the discussion.
