The renovated Narahenpita Railway Station has been reopened for public use today (06).
The reopening ceremony was held under the patronage of Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake.
The station was upgraded under the “Dream Destination” programme, a public-private partnership initiative aimed at modernising 100 railway stations across the country.
The programme is being implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development under the supervision of the Department Railways, with the “Clean Sri Lanka” Secretariat involved as part of a sustainable development initiative.
Located between the Cotta Road and Kirulapone halt stations on the Kelani Valley line, the Narahenpita station had remained in a dilapidated condition for several years without major renovation.
Officials said the station serves a large number of commuters due to the presence of government and private sector institutions in the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, Minister Rathnayake said preliminary steps will be taken next year to introduce electric train services as part of broader railway modernisation plans.
He said the first phase would cover the Colombo–Panadura, Colombo–Makumbura and Colombo–Ragama routes.
