The Thambuttegama Water Supply Project will be officially inaugurated today (July 10) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The project, which draws water from the Angamuwa Reservoir, has been implemented to provide safe and clean drinking water to residents of the Thambuttegama, Thalawa and Galnewa areas. It serves the entire Thambuttegama Divisional Secretariat Division, as well as parts of the Thalawa and Galnewa Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
The project covers 42 Grama Niladhari divisions and is expected to benefit 91,810 people. Through the provision of 25,000 new water connections, thousands of households will gain access to reliable, high-quality drinking water.
Construction of the second phase of the Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project is also scheduled to commence today under the President's patronage at the Kebithigollewa Water Supply Complex.
The project will cover the Padaviya, Horowpathane, Kahatagasdigiliya and Kebithigollewa Divisional Secretariat Divisions, encompassing 119 Grama Niladhari divisions. It is expected to provide safe drinking water to 170,951 people by 2034.
A major component of the project is the provision of 50,000 new household water connections. It is also expected to help reduce health issues associated with the consumption of groundwater containing high fluoride levels, including chronic kidney disease.
The Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project is a nationally significant development initiative jointly implemented by the Government of Sri Lanka and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
