The Department of Meteorology has stated that although the El Niño climate phenomenon, originating in the Pacific Ocean, has commenced and is currently at a weak level, it could intensify during the upcoming months of October and November.

According to global weather forecasts, the El Niño condition may lead to climate anomalies and weather variations in many countries around the world, including Sri Lanka, said Meril Mendis, Director of the Forecasting Division of the Department of Meteorology.

According to a previous announcement issued by the Department of Meteorology, there is a 63% probability that the El Niño condition could develop into a very strong level during the period from November this year to January 2027.

However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States has indicated that there is also a one-third probability that the phenomenon may not reach a very strong level.

Noting that the prevailing Southwest Monsoon rainfall could decrease due to this situation, Meril Mendis stated that above-average rainfall is generally expected during the months of October and November.

He further stated that measures will be taken to ensure the proper management of water resources, taking into consideration current water storage levels and anticipated future rainfall patterns.

Accordingly, steps will be taken to promote the economical and systematic use of water for sectors such as agricultural planning, electricity generation, and the provision of drinking water.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Dammika Patabendi stated that a special program integrating all relevant ministries will be formulated within the next two weeks to effectively address the potential impacts of this climatic condition.

The Minister has requested the farming community to commence cultivation activities for the upcoming ‘Maha’ season ahead of the scheduled period in order to minimize potential losses caused by the effects of El Niño.
