Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has warned that a heightened risk of dengue transmission may continue until mid-August due to the prevailing weather conditions in the country.
The Minister urged the public to extend maximum support to dengue prevention programmes launched by health authorities and to ensure that homes, schools, and workplaces are kept clean to prevent mosquito breeding.
He further stated that a significant rise in dengue cases has been reported in the Gampaha District at present.
Meanwhile, the National Dengue Control Unit has announced that a special dengue prevention programme targeting 11 districts will commence today (16) in response to the island wide dengue risk.
Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, said the programme will be conducted continuously for the next two weeks, focusing on the identified districts.
The main objectives of the initiative are to identify areas with high dengue transmission rates, eliminate mosquito breeding sites, and raise public awareness on dengue prevention measures.
