The second Kumbal Perahera of the historic 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera paraded the streets of Kandy last night (19), showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
The procession, marking the 1,716th Sri Dalada Perahera, commenced at 6:41 p.m. at an auspicious time, beginning its journey from the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
A notable feature of last night’s procession was that Janaraja, an elephant belonging to the Sri Dalada Maligawa, carried the casket after a gap of 25 years.
The elephants Miyan Raja and Singha Raja accompanied Janaraja as the tuskers on either side.
The procession set off from the vicinity of the Sri Dalada Maligawa and proceeded along the Dalada Veediya and D. S. Senanayake Veediya, before making its way up Raja Veediya and returning to the Maligawa.
The third Kumbal Perahera is scheduled to take to the streets tonight (20).
