YouTube has announced that it is changing the way it counts public view counts for its videos, in an effort to align the metrics by which creators assess how their videos have done.
From August 24, which is when the change will reflect, views will be counted from the very instant the video starts playing.
A Google employee confirmed the update on a YouTube Help page and said that the change will not impact creators’ earnings or how they become eligible for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).
The company acknowledged that it had used multiple view counting systems across formats, but noted that creators wanted less confusion when calculating their exposure.
Even so, the company’s original view metric, called “Engaged views,” will remain accessible. Creator earnings will also continue to be based on the ”Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours” metrics, per the company.
“Last year, we updated how we count public views for Shorts to better capture how viewers watch on YouTube. Now, we’re aligning all other video formats to this same standard for consistency across the platform. Beginning on 8/24/2026, a view will be counted the moment a video begins to play—from the very first frame. This standard will now apply globally across all formats,” stated YouTube.
