Sri Lankan athlete Rumesh Tharanga has secured first place in the javelin throw event at the 2026 Diamond League meet in Lausanne, Switzerland, with an outstanding throw of 88.14 metres.
Tharanga’s latest victory adds to a remarkable run of performances that has established him among the world’s leading javelin throwers.
The 23-year-old athlete recently held the number one position in the world men’s javelin rankings, following a series of impressive performances on the international stage.
Tharanga recently made history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland by winning the men’s javelin throw gold medal with a remarkable effort of 89.75 metres.
His Commonwealth Games victory earned him a world ranking score of 1,354, placing him ahead of Germany’s Julian Weber, who is ranked second with 1,348 points, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters remains in third place.
Meanwhile, Tharanga’s triumph at the Commonwealth Games also marked a historic milestone for Sri Lankan athletics, as he became the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games athletics gold medallist.
He produced the winning 89.75-metre throw on his second attempt at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, to outclass a world-class field and secure a landmark victory for Sri Lanka.
The gold medal also ended Sri Lanka’s 20-year wait for a Commonwealth Games gold medal. The country’s previous gold had been won by weightlifter Chinthana Vidanage at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
