Police have received reports of vehicles and motorcycles being stolen after motorists and motorcyclists negligently leave their vehicles unattended, Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F.U. Wootler said.
Speaking at a press conference today (21), ASP Wootler said there have also been reports of valuable documents and other items being stolen from vehicles and motorcycles that were left unattended.
He noted that police had observed instances where three-wheeler drivers and motorcyclists leave their vehicles with the engines running while attending to other matters. In some cases, individuals engaged in criminal activities have stolen the vehicles after the keys were left in the motorcycles or three-wheelers.
Police have also received reports of vehicles, motorcycles and three-wheelers being stolen after being parked outside homes, particularly when gates to the premises had been left unlocked, he said.
Accordingly, the Police Media Spokesman advised motorists who park their vehicles in crowded areas to inform a security officer in the vicinity. Those parking at shopping complexes are also advised to inform the relevant security personnel or an employee of the shopping complex.
He further urged the public to remain vigilant when parking vehicles or motorcycles at night or in isolated locations, as such conditions could provide an opportunity for criminals to commit thefts.
ASP Wootler also urged anyone whose vehicle has been stolen to immediately inform the Police Emergency Hotline on 119 or 118, the nearest police station, or a nearby police officer.
