
Four people, including a police sergeant have been killed in four separate road accidents reported in Keppetipola, Koslanda, Kotawila and Matara yesterday (8), police said.
Police noted that a three-wheeler travelling towards Nuwara Eliya collided with the rear of a lorry parked along the Nuwara Eliya–Badulla Road in Alakolagala within the Keppetipola Police Division.
A 19-year-old passenger of the three-wheeler sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Welimada Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. He was a resident of Nuwara Eliya.
In another accident on the Koslanda–Wellawaya Road in Udumulla, a motorcycle travelling towards Wellawaya collided with a tipper truck approaching from the opposite direction.
The motorcyclist, who sustained serious injuries, was admitted to the Koslanda Hospital but later died.
He was a 58-year-old police sergeant attached to the Koslanda Police Station and a resident of Haldummulla.
Meanwhile, in the Kotawila Police Division, a three-wheeler travelling towards Sultanagoda overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle on the Sultanagoda Road.
The 68-year-old driver, a resident of Sultanagoda, was seriously injured and admitted to the Matara Hospital, where he later died.
The fourth fatal accident occurred in the Matara Police Division on the Matara–Akuressa Road, near the junction leading to the Godagama Expressway entrance.
Police said a motorcycle travelling towards Matara collided with another motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction while attempting to overtake a bus. One of the riders was thrown onto the road and was run over by the bus, dying at the scene.
The other motorcyclist sustained injuries and was admitted to the Matara Hospital.
The deceased rider was a 19-year-old resident of Pitabeddara.
