Delegates from the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and regional maritime information and operations centres visited the Information Fusion Centre Colombo to explore ways of strengthening maritime information sharing and regional cooperation.

The two-day programme focused on common challenges in processing maritime data and identifying practical measures to improve the timely and effective exchange of information among maritime information fusion centres and law-enforcement agencies, the Sri Lanka Navy said in a statement.

The visiting delegation comprised three representatives from INTERPOL, two representatives from the Regional Maritime Information Fusion Centre (RMIFC) Madagascar, two representatives from the Regional Coordination Operations Centre (RCOC) Seychelles and a Coordination Officer from the National Central Bureau (NCB) Colombo.

During the programme, participants shared their experiences and perspectives on maritime information management, while identifying common challenges and opportunities for closer cooperation. Discussions also examined practical approaches to enhancing information-sharing mechanisms and improving coordination between relevant regional and law-enforcement institutions.

The programme highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration among maritime information fusion centres and law-enforcement agencies to enhance maritime situational awareness and support coordinated responses to emerging challenges in the maritime domain.

The visit provided an opportunity for the participating organizations to further strengthen professional links and explore avenues for continued regional cooperation in maritime information sharing, the Navy added further.
